A Revision of Xanthosoma (Araceae). Part 3: Guianas

ABSTRACT

Species of the genus Xanthosoma (Araceae) from the Guianas Region (comprising Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana) are revised and illustrated. Out of the 22 species found in the area, 10 are described here as new. The new Xanthosoma species are X. bakhuisense Croat & Delannay, X. corentynense Croat & Delannay, X. cremersii Croat & Delannay, X. danielsii Croat & Delannay, X. gillespieae Croat & Delannay, X. paruimaense Croat & Delannay, X. rupununiense Croat & Delannay, X. sinnamaryense Croat & Delannay, X. trinitense Croat & Delannay and X. tuberculatum Croat & Delannay. Besides these 10 new species, an additional unpublished species (with sterile specimens and therefore not published here as new) is also described. A determination key is also presented for all Xanthosoma species present in the Guianas. Twelve Xanthosoma species were present in Guyana (6 of them new), 7 in Suriname (3 of them new) and 13 in French Guiana (4 of them new). A modified form of this treatment will also appear in the treatment for the Flora of the Guiana currently being prepared for publication under the direction of its editorial board in Utrecht.
