hybrids in Cryptocoryne (Araceae) 3. Hybridization
between species from Borneo

ABSTRACT
Species of Cryptocoryne in Borneo vary in chromosome
number; the most widely used and most successful hybrid combinations belong to
the 2n = 34 group in combinations with 2n = 30, 2n = 36
and 2n = 68 species. The identification of Bornean species of Cryptocoryne is usually straightforward; only
a few cases have proven difficult and these have been
shown to represent natural interspecific hybrids. The present study
demonstrates that artificial hybrids are easily created within the Bornean Cryptocoryne species, and it was possible to
resynthesize some of the naturally occurring interspecific hybrids. We predict
the existence of more naturallyoccurring hybrids than
those presently known from Borneo.
